Soccer and Reading Club

Segundo Barrio Futbol Club Soccer and Reading Club is an after school program based at Hart and Zavala Elementary Schools in El Paso for students in grades 3 through 5.

The objective of the program is help develop a love of reading through a variety of activities such as literature circles, readers' theater and book discussions and also to engage the students in healthy, physical activity through playing soccer. Each session students receive one hour of reading instruction followed by one hour of soccer instruction.

Many of the students at Hart and Zavala who struggle academically love to play soccer. The chance to play soccer motivates them to do well in the reading portion of the club. There are also students that are not very active physically. An after school program that involves physical activity is a way to promote a healthy lifestyle.

The Soccer and Reading Club runs year round, Monday and Wednesday from 3:30 to 5:30pm. There are currently 50 boys and girls in grades 3 through 5 enrolled in the program.
